Practicalmadness is written, edited, designed and beaten into submission with a cricket bat by David Demaree (pictured at left; note that he’s the one without an arm sticking out of his skull). The site launched in September 2000 as an ill-concieved webzine, before the whole blog thing took off and provided ~~an easy model we could rip off~~ a new and exciting way forward in the personal publishing space.

Practicalmadness is the successor to a prior site called Demaree’s World (and its newsletter, the Communique; circulation: 50), which launched in 1995, which was back when the Web was like in beta or some shit.

Please note that the proper name of the web site is Practicalmadness, not “Practical Madness,” “PracticalMadness” or “Cute Overload.”

Every Spring for the past several Springs, we host the annual Practicalmadness Oscars Game, a chance to win one or more prizes by predicting which films will win Oscars, which is as much a crapshoot these days as predicting whether David will ever get around to mailing prizes. Seriously -- Crash for Best Picture over Brokeback Mountain? What the fuck, Hollywood?

The site is powered by Movable Type version 3.35, a so-called “personal publishing platform” that facilitates “community” through the practice of “blogging,” which is distinguished from the practice of “self-involved jibber jabber” only by the use of, um…folksonomy, maybe?

Anyhow, Practicalmadness is hosted on a Joyent Shared Accelerator, about which your narrator has few complaints.

Officially, technically, really, this site is a production of Practical Creative & Code, a Chicago-based company proudly serving all your ~~industrial lathe~~ web development needs since slightly earlier this decade.
